BE THE CHANGE!

At the University of Manchester we believe that everyone has the right to live, study and work in an environment, free from the fear of harassment, discrimination or violence.

The ‘Speak Up Stand Up!  Active Bystander Campaign builds on these achievements and aims to increase knowledge and confidence in people so that they are empowered to safely speak out against all forms of harassment, sexual harassment, and discrimination and hate crime, stereotypes and micro-aggressions, both online and in person.

Co-producing Campaign Materials

We want students to help us to develop materials that will help us to explore some of these issues and help people understand the potential impact on individuals and communities.

We’ll be holding an information session on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th February 2018 at the Students Union.

Background

Since the launch of the ‘We Get It’ Campaign in 2014, the University and the Students Union have successfully worked in collaboration to tackle these issues and support our University community.  Our award winning campus wide communications campaign, which received visible support from senior managers, has promoted our zero tolerance approach.

The campaign has been a great success the video produced has been viewed over 7,000 times; 8500 people on our campus signed a pledge to stand up to sexual harassment.  Our innovative Report and Support platform has meant that more people are reporting incidents and getting the support and advice that they need. Since its launch in 2015, 515 people have used the system, 298 to report something anonymously and 217 have spoken to a Harassment Support Advisor (HSA).

The campaign has been highlighted as sector-leading and innovative practice in advancing equality and diversity by the HEFCE.  UUK included our Report and Support platform as a case study of good practice within the Changing the Culture report and we have helped colleagues across the sector to develop their own campaigns and set up reporting systems.

The Campaign

The campaign will include:

  • An engaging campus wide communications campaign, which will include connecting with people using a range of social media.
  • A bystander education programme for students that will guide them through the 4 stages of bystander intervention.
  • A bystander education programme for Schools will be developed and piloted.

The campaigns key messages are:

  • See it. We want to present people with the facts on problematic behaviours such as harassment, sexual harassment, hate crime, discrimination, sexual assault, domestic abuse, micro-aggressions and stereotyping.
  • Know it’s a problem. We want to help people to recognise problematic behaviours, what motivates them and the potential risks to individuals, communities and society.
  • Take responsibility. We want to encourage people to address their own attitudes and beliefs, and increase empathy for those who have experienced problematic behaviours, encouraging an individual sense of responsibility.
  • Take action. We want to equip people with the necessary skills and knowledge to be confident that they can identify how to safely deal with problematic behaviours when they occur.
